If you are like most people, you probably are wondering what you can do to make your 2019 better than the previous year. You have looked at the numbers, done some reflecting and possibly written down some things you need to do. While that is great, where most people falter is in follow-through. Mot great goals amount to nothing because the person setting them did not keep at them for long enough. If you want your 2019 to be awesome, you need to master the following steps and then follow through each until the end of the year.
1. Set Meaningful Goals
There are goals, and then there are meaningful goals. What’s the difference? General goals are things like wanting to sell five more homes than you sold last year. While this is a goal, it isn’t meaningful in any way. A meaningful goal would be to say you will sell double the number of homes you sold last year or 50% more. It also means setting clear indicators of what that means in sales volume, commissions, your status as an agent and any other factors associated with achieving those meaningful goals.
2. Figure Out Why
Wanting to sell 100 homes in a year is great but why do you want to achieve this goal? Is it to establish yourself as a top agent? Is it to get promoted at your brokerage? Is it to make more money? Being clear as to why you want such results will generate emotion, and emotion generates motion. Another important thing to ask yourself is what consequences, both good and bad, will result if you do/ do not achieve this goal. For instance, if you achieve it, can you picture the joy, satisfaction, pride, you and those around you will have? How about if you don’t and negative emotions affect both you and those around you? Figuring out why you want to achieve your goals will tell you how badly you want what you want.
3. Identify Your Daily Number
What is your daily number? According to studies, as a new real estate agent, you need to have 80 conversations to close one sale. Veteran agents need to have half as many conversations to close one sale. With this math, if you want to sell 25 homes in 2019, you will need to make 200 or 100 calls per month depending on if you are a new agent or a veteran. These numbers work out to 12 or 6 people per day. Once you have identified your number, it becomes easy to create predictable steps that lead you to your goals.
4. Track and Measure All the Numbers
For many solo and small business owners, the bottom line is often all that matters. Cash in – cash out, the difference determines whether the business is doing well or not. Approaching your business this way denies you insights into what is working and what isn’t. Should you market more, or cut back expenses? Should you hire a PR professional or a digital marketing firm? Digging into the numbers and stats of what is going on in your business will help you see opportunities in places you would never have thought possible.
5. Start Now
2019 is already here so what better time to start, right? Some people will tell you the first few months of the year are slow so you shouldn’t push too hard. Others will tell you certain months throughout the year are best. In truth, the best time to sell is now. It does not matter when that now is. If you wait, then you’ll not have time to build momentum to carry you through the year. So, start now and get your goals in motion.
Bonus Point: Celebrate More
If you have committed to do everything above then, you have your work cut out for you, and it won’t be easy. To keep you going when things get tough, learn to celebrate more and pat yourself on the back. If you don’t, 2019 could end up becoming the same old grind we all hate, and that’s not what any of us wants out of 2019.
