We live at a time when creating and publishing content has never been so easy. Whether text content or video or any other type, tools exist today that make it possible for anyone to create high-quality content. This ease often tricks people into thinking that content marketing is easy. That just because they can create content easily, then everything else will fall into place. If you have been creating content for a while, you know this could not be further from the truth. Content without an audience is dead. It does not matter how awesome the content is, if no one is consuming it, it has no value. So, how can you build an audience around your content? Here are three ways to do it.

Don’t Be Selfish

According to Gary Vaynerchuk, most people fail at building an audience because they are selfish. He gives an illustration of how most people who ask him for advice always ask for things that concern them as individuals. How can I get more views? How can I get more subscribers? Very few ever ask him how they can be more impactful to their audience. This self-centeredness ends up making it difficult to see what people are looking for. The result is often a situation where content publishers feel unappreciated or misunderstood. In reality, they are missing important cues from the market that may help them put out content that would be meaningful to their target audience.

Understand Supply and Demand

While the ease of creating quality content is amazing, on the flip side, it means anyone can do it. This creates a situation where supply is higher than demand, leading to many content creators struggling to find audiences. As a real estate agent, you need to understand the laws of supply and demand, especially as pertains to content, to stand out. If everyone is creating content around home improvement, that may not be a good area for you to focus on. Try, instead, talking about something that few are talking about. It may end up that your content will appeal to a smaller audience, but a small engaged audience is better than no audience at all.

Embrace Reality

This is another major challenge content creators face. Believing in the fake-it-till-you-make-it mantra, most spend lots of money creating high-quality content before they have built an audience. In real estate, this may mean hiring an entire filming crew for an open house or similar event. The worst part is such a video often ends up posted to a YouTube channel that has no subscribers. Instead of doing this, you need to be honest with yourself and accept that you need to build an audience first. This is doubtless the harder place to start, but it is the right place to start. Invest in building an audience and then work at giving them high-quality content.

Conclusion

Building an audience takes time. But more importantly, it takes a deep understanding and appreciation of what you are trying to do. Creating content for the sake of it or so you can become an Internet personality is often the wrong motivation. Instead, doing it for the right reasons, including providing useful and helpful content for your audience, is the right place to start.
