Everyone has dreams. Whether big or small, we all aspire to certain things that are beyond our reach at the moment. These dreams encompass our aspirations, hopes, expectations and general desire for the future we want to live. The difference comes in how we each approach our dreams. For some people, dreams are just that, dreams. They remain in a fantasy world and are to be treated as such. For others, dreams are what keep them going, helping them overcome obstacles.

While everyone has been accorded dreams, what you do with your dreams is what will determine whether you make it in life or not; whether you turn those dreams into a reality or not; whether those dreams give you wings or become a crushing weight that drags you down. In this article, I share with you three ways dreams can help you excel and rise above your situation.

They Keep You Focused on What Matters

Let’s say your dream is to live in a million-dollar home. At face value, that statement means you need to have at least a million dollars to purchase such a home. By maintaining this perspective, your dream can help you keep an eye on your income and do whatever it takes to keep growing your savings. Without such a dream, you will not have a target, and we all know that if you do not have a destination, any will do. So, by nurturing your dreams, you can use them as a compass to keep you focused on what matters and what moves you closer to achieving your dreams.

They Drown Out the Voices of Naysayers

Negativity is a fact of life. As you pursue your dreams, you will encounter naysayers who will make it seem like you are on a fool’s errand. You want to drive around in a Rolls Royce; they’ll say that’s being a showoff and being superficial. You want to build a million-dollar business empire; they’ll say it will destroy your family. By focusing on your dreams and what they mean to you, you can drown out these negative voices and keep forging ahead. While these negative voices may come from people, most of the time they will originate in your mind. They will come disguised as fear, doubt, laziness and procrastination, and so on. You need to keep reminding yourself of your dreams and why they matter, so these voices do not end up determining how your life turns out.

They Help You Channel Your Energy

Every morning when you wake up, you have a store of energy that’s ready for use. This is mental, physical, emotional and spiritual energy. How you use that store of energy will depend on what you focus on. As motivational guru Tony Robbins says, “Where focus goes, energy flows.” If your focus is 100% on achieving your dreams, that is where your energy will flow. As energy is like an investment, the more you invest your energy in your dreams, the closer to reality they will become. Lack of focus, on the other hand, will lead to wasted energy at the end of the day, with nothing to show for it.

Your Dreams are Who You Really Are

If you search deep within yourself, you will realize that your dreams reflect who you are deep down. They not only define who you are, they ARE who you are. By embracing your dreams, you are embracing yourself and who you are. Similarly, when you give up on you dreams, you are giving up on yourself and who you are. Don’t do this. Use the three insights outlined above as a springboard to turning your dreams into reality.
