Discipline and consistency are those things that everyone knows are required to attain success but somehow, everyone still struggles to do. As an agent, you know that making sales calls, booking appointments and sending out newsletters are things that will bring you big success if done consistently. However, you also know that you are not as disciplined as you wish you were in doing these things. Although many may call it the human condition, the interesting thing is that habits and behavior are all it takes to gain discipline and consistency. This is because these two traits are not random things that people do occasionally, instead, they are behavioral patterns that are formed over time and that soon become second to nature. In this article, we look at three ways you can build discipline and consistency into your daily routine, making them second to nature of how you do things.

Become Aware

Lack of awareness is what leaves most behaviors and unproductive habits unchanged. What are the serious negative consequences of continuing certain behaviors? What are the serious positive consequences of continuing certain behaviors? If you are not aware of the consequences of what you are doing, there is no way you will make the effort to change. For instance, what are the long-term consequences of not making your morning calls consistently? You and your family may suffer. What happens if you do not consistently build your pipeline? You could run out of leads and your business may be forced to shut down or you could lose your job. By becoming aware of the mid and long-term consequences of your actions, you will be more focused on changing such behaviors.

Replace Patterns

Our world is dominated by patterns. Patterns in nature, patterns in science and mathematics, patterns in business, and patterns in behavior. By looking at the patterns in a person’s life, it is possible to know where they will be ten/twenty years. As patterns are so powerful, by changing the patterns in your life, you can have a significant impact on your future. These patterns start with your attitude toward life. Your attitude, in turn, is made up of your self-talk, your focus and your body language. By conforming to certain patterns in these areas, your actions are influenced in a specific way. What if you changed these patterns? What if you turned negative self-talk into positive self-talk? What if instead of focusing on all that isn’t working, you focus instead on all that is? What if you woke up each day and did a victory dance before starting your sales calls? All these are patterns that can significantly impact your future if applied.

Accountability

The last ingredient to becoming disciplined is accountability to reinforce patterns. If you tell yourself you will change, who will keep you accountable? If you promise to make a dozen sales calls each morning, who will hold you accountable if you don’t? Recruit your family, friends, coworkers, neighbors, your dog, anyone really, to keep you accountable as you re-engineer your behavioral patterns. The greater the accountability network, the harder it will be to hide from it. Put yourself out there and put your money where your mouth is; you will be surprised at how quickly the new patterns become the new normal.

Conclusion

Forming new habits is not easy. In fact, it will take you up to four months to get a new pattern of behaviors. But the upshot is that your life will never be the same again. If you were closing ten deals a month, now you will be closing double that. If you were making five sales calls each morning, now you are making twenty. If you were feeling defeated and beating yourself up over procrastination, now you are getting things done on time. If for nothing else, changing your patterns to become more disciplined will make you feel good about yourself, something every agent needs if they are to build a successful real estate business.
