How to Beat Real Estate Slumps to Emerge Stronger

Doldrums: a state or period of stagnation. Real estate agents know this scenario all too well. The market isn’t moving, your phone’s been silent for days, and perhaps the weather too isn’t helping as it’s cold and dreary outdoors. Such times can be testing. You get to the office and you sit and wonder what you’ll do all day now that the market is asleep. Instead of giving up and taking a “break”, here are five things you can do to beat the doldrums.

Keep Moving

It’s easier to maintain speed than to pick up speed. If you allow yourself to slow down or come to a halt, it will be that more difficult to pick up your speed when the market starts moving again. How do you keep moving? Stick to your routine or switch up the routine if your regular routine does not make sense currently. This could mean having a separate routine for when the market is slow.

For instance, if the first thing you do when you get to the office is check your mail, switch that up. Start by writing a blog post or social media post. Or start by going through your marketing material and finetuning it. A wise man once said prepare for war in a time of peace. Similarly, spend your time preparing for the high season during low season.

Leave the Office

A change is as good as a rest. If you find staying in the office isn’t doing you much good, switch things up. Head out to the nearest coffee shop and do some work from there. Hit the library and do some reading to brush up on your knowledge. If the weather allows, try working outdoors so you get fresh air and open skies. All these can help you feel less cooped up and help you be more productive even with a slow market.

Get Motivated

Nothing gets people motivated like motivation. Sounds cheesy but it’s true. If your days at the office have become unbearable, try getting in some motivation by listening to motivational talks. Some great recommendations are Zig Ziglar, Tony Robins, and Grant Cardone. These three alone can give you enough motivation to get you through the lowest market and the coldest of winters. The point here is to feed your brain with positivity during a time when it is prone to negativity. Doing this will help you counter any negative thoughts that may creep into your mind.

Back to basics

The market is slow, and you are wondering what to do to get at least some movement. Like Baloo said in Mowgli, the bear necessities may be just what you need. Trackback to a time when you were crushing it. What were you doing differently? What tactics and methods were you employing to generate leads? While the market may have changed, analyzing these basics may yield some actions you can take to shake things up.

Embrace the pain

While the pain of doing something is the leading cause of procrastination, it can also be a wonderful motivator. Think of it this way, what is worse, the pain of doing it, or the pain of not accomplishing it? It’s an interesting puzzle to ponder. Either way, you will have pain but the pain of not doing it comes with additional unpleasant feelings of guilt and regret. However, the pain of doing it comes with the positive feelings of progress and the prospect of completing the task.

If you are stuck in the doldrums, don’t allow this slowness to prevent you from accomplishing your tasks. Keep in mind, a slow market means you have more time, so there really is no reason not to crush the tasks you have at hand. Embrace the pain and let it lead you to greater heights.

Whether it is a season like a winter that’s depressed the market, or there is just a general lethargy in the market, doing these five things can help you work through the tough conditions. Sitting and doing nothing, on the other hand, will only make the tough conditions more unbearable.
