Social media is massive. In fact, that’s an understatement. In the United States alone, 68% of the ENTIRE adult population uses Facebook on a regular basis. As a real estate agent, this means how you package yourself, market your business and generate leads must change if you are going to succeed in this new social media connected marketplace. To help you achieve this, today we are starting an eleven-part series titled, “Top 11 Social Media Mistakes Costing Real Estate Agents Leads & Referrals.” Over the course of this series, we shall be looking at the pitfalls you may face as you implement social media marketing in your real estate agency business and how to overcome these pitfalls.

To begin, in this intro article we shall be going over a few statistics and numbers that will help you see why social media is so important to your marketing strategy. We’ll also lay the ground for the upcoming episodes by helping you gain context of what social media is.

First, some important numbers:

  • Top three content types people want to see more of in the future: social media posts 45%, news articles 44%, videos 43%.

  • Millennials and Generation Y’ers (aged 36 and below) make up the largest group of homebuyers today at 34%, with 66% of this group being first-time buyers.

  • Every one in six minutes spent online is spent on Facebook.

  • Mobile accounts for 80% of total time spent on social media.

  • Of all social media platforms, Facebook is the most widely used, with 79% of American internet users on the platform.

  • 79% of the largest homebuying group are on Facebook.

  • 1.6 billion people visited Facebook daily in 2016 and watched over 100 million hours of videos daily over the period.

  • Close to 100% of homebuyers aged 71 and below begin their search for properties online while half of these eventually found their home online.

  • While searches start online, over 90% of buyers aged 36 and below ended up purchasing a home through a real estate agent.

These numbers paint a simple yet important picture, that social media has taken over the world of online communication. What does this mean for you as a real estate agent? It means how your customers communicate and behave online has changed. Whereas in the past a lot of communication was via email, today, most of your customers are engaging with each other via social media. It means simply that their behavior has changed. To reach them today, your strategy and tactics also have to change. You need to reach them on social media and communicate and engage with them in a manner that’s consistent with the new reality painted above.
