If you are a small business owner, you probably have employees that work under your supervision to meet business needs. Or, if you are a solopreneur who is looking to hire an assistant or manage a team then this post is for you. Today, I will share some tips to manage the team and maximize the talent you already have.

Maybe, you already have some good employees on your team but you just want them to perform a little better to bring you better results. Let’s jump right into team management.

1- VALUE EACH MEMBER OF YOUR TEAM Why did you hire an employee? What are the tasks you assigned? What are the employees doing? Or, maybe you just need to switch over their tasks and assign them the work they’re most passionate about.

Are your team members excited about their work? Are they in the right position?

Know your team members and what they are doing. Rather than losing them, see if there is another suitable job for them on the team. Moreover, give value to each member and see what they are best at doing.

2- STAY CONNECTED

A business always remains a business. You cannot always talk, and communicate with your employees just like friends. But, sometimes, you need to connect with the members on a more personal level. You have to know them, their families, and their interests. In order to stay connected, you have to find out who they are.

People who feel connected to you will probably stick around longer and have a better relationship with you.

3- WEEKLY FACE TO FACE CONNECTION

If you are a busy person, and you are not able to meet employees and connect with them, find some ways to have one-to-one meetings with the people. Just find out some ways to connect with people for 10-20 minutes, once a week, in a face to face conversation. A small meeting with the boss will always make employees feel connected and listened to. People who feel appreciated by their employers always give their best and don’t go looking for other jobs.

4- VIDEO CALLING

If you’re not in your office every day, or if you work remotely or if you have a bigger team, try doing video messages with your team. There’s a lot of options to do live videos and connect with your team members. You can use Google hangouts, Skype, WhatsApp, etc. There are a number of options that you can use online to connect with your staff.

So, record a video message and send it your team. Appreciate their work and give some quick advice on the new ideas, planning, etc. Have your message communicated in the video format so they can see you and connect with you.

5- RECOGNIZE GOOD WORK

Everybody wants to feel appreciated. Everybody wants to know that they are doing a good job. Recognize your team members for their best performance. Let them know that they are doing a great job.

Talk about things that they have done well for the business. Talk about goals and how you have hit them with the help of the team members. It’s important to recognize the work of each individual member and how it has benefited the overall business growth.

6- BE AUTHENTIC WITH YOUR PRAISE

You don’t just say ‘good job’ to everyone all the time. You have to give praise in a way that’s more meaningful. Try to be very authentic when you praise someone for their tasks.

Find a way to compliment and praise the people on your team for what they do. Call them out in front of others. Praise in public.

7- TRACK YOUR TEAM PROGRESS

In businesses, the most important thing is goal setting. First, you set goals for your business and then, set a plan to achieve your goals. At the end, track the results.

Each team member should be tracking their results. Track how many calls they have made, how many appointments have they set this month.

It’s also important for you to double check what your team members. Track the overall results on your end. Follow up with them on their monthly goals and help them track their progress.

But, you should also track your team members progress as a team leader.

8- BE AN INNOVATIVE AND CREATIVE LEADER

Sometimes, you have to go out and implement new things. There are new technologies that are coming out. There are always new ideas for your business. As a creative leader, you just have to embrace new things and encourage the team to get on it.

At The Orange Stack, I always try new things. We do Facebook Live videos every Friday. I try to come up with a new location every time to give my viewers a new experience and a great background.

I encourage thoughts and ideas that come from my team members. I also have more options to experiment. So, always try to be innovative and creative. Sometimes, you have to try new things and adapt them. Don’t just get stuck in a rut and do the same things forever.

9- PLAN AHEAD

As I discussed before goal-setting is truly important to the success of any business. Try to plan at least one-year goals for you and the team, if not a five-year plan. The next thing is to inform your team members and make them excited about the new year goals. Help them embrace the journey. Help your team members understand your business goals. Share with your team members so they know exactly how you are looking at the future goals.

10- BUILD A GREAT TEAM WITH SUPPORT

Managing a team means growing members and giving support to each of them. As a leader, you have to make a great team by providing enough support. You should listen to all the concerns and problems.

The idea is to plan your future and decide what’s coming up next. How can you fill up the gaps in your business? So, consider suggestions from your team members, listen to them, and make a great team.
